Adaptive learning
Learning that adjusts content, pace or difficulty for each learner based on how they perform.
AI agent
An AI system that can carry out multi-step tasks towards a goal, such as finding information and taking actions, rather than only answering one question.
AI caching
Storing the results of repeated AI requests so they can be reused without calling the AI model again, which saves time and cost.
AI governance
The policies and controls that decide how AI is used in an organisation: which models are allowed, who can use them, and how output is reviewed.
AI moderation
Automatic screening of prompts, posts or comments to flag or block harmful, abusive or off-policy content.
AICC
An older e-learning standard, from the Aviation Industry CBT Committee, that lets a course report progress and scores to an LMS.
API
Application Programming Interface: a defined way for two software systems to exchange data and trigger actions in each other.
Audience segmentation
Grouping users by attributes such as role, department or location so that content, rules and messages can be targeted to each group.
Audit log
A time-stamped record of who did what in a system and when, used for security reviews and compliance evidence.
Azure OpenAI
Microsoft’s cloud service that provides OpenAI models hosted inside Microsoft Azure.
BI (business intelligence)

Bloom’s taxonomy
A widely used framework that ranks learning objectives from remembering and understanding up to evaluating and creating, used to write questions at the right level.
Bring your own API key (BYOK)
You connect your own account with an AI provider. The AI provider bills you directly for usage, and you control the limits.
Bring your own LLM
Connecting a large language model of your choice, including one your organisation hosts, instead of a model chosen by the software vendor.
Competency mapping
Linking each job role to the skills it needs, and measuring people against those skills to find gaps.
CRM
Customer relationship management: software that holds customer, sales and service records, such as Salesforce or HubSpot.
CSV
Comma-separated values: a plain-text spreadsheet format commonly used to import or export lists such as users.
Custom domain
Running the platform on your own web address (for example learn.yourcompany.com) instead of the vendor’s address.
DAU / MAU
Daily and monthly active users. Comparing the two shows how often people come back, a common measure of engagement.
Dedicated cloud
A hosting environment whose servers are reserved for one customer rather than shared with others.
Disaster recovery
Plans and systems for restoring service and data after a major failure, for example from backups or a second location.
Drop-off point
The place in a course or flow where many learners stop, which shows where content may need work.
Dynamic group
A group whose members update automatically when user attributes change, instead of being maintained by hand.
Encryption
Encoding data so only authorised parties can read it, both while it travels over a network (in transit) and while it is stored (at rest).
Enterprise search
Search that covers content from many sources and systems in one place.
Event-level analytics
Tracking individual actions, such as views, clicks and answers, rather than only totals, so you can see exactly how people use content.
Feature flag
A switch that turns a feature on or off for chosen users or tenants without releasing new software.
GA4
Google Analytics 4, Google’s web and app analytics service.
Gamification
Using game elements such as points, badges and leaderboards to motivate learners.
GDPR
The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, the law that governs how personal data of people in the EU is collected and used.
GraphQL
A query language for APIs that lets an application ask for exactly the data it needs in a single request.
High availability
A system design that keeps a service running when a part fails, usually by running spare copies of key components.
HRIS / HRMS / HCM
Human resources information system, HR management system and human capital management: software that holds employee records such as job, department and manager.
Identity provider (IdP)
A service that stores user identities and handles sign-in for other applications, such as Okta or Microsoft Entra ID.
ILT (instructor-led training)
Training delivered live by an instructor, in a classroom or in a virtual session.
JIT provisioning
Just-in-time provisioning: a user account is created automatically the first time a person signs in through single sign-on.
Knowledge check
A short, low-stakes quiz inside a lesson that checks understanding before the learner moves on.
Kubernetes
Open-source software that runs and scales containerised applications. A dedicated cluster is a Kubernetes environment reserved for one customer.
Learning circle
A small group of peers who learn a topic together and support each other.
Learning heatmap
A colour-coded chart that shows where learning activity is high or low, for example by team, topic or time.
Learning path
An ordered sequence of courses and activities that leads to a goal such as a role or certification.
LLM (large language model)
An AI model trained on large amounts of text that can understand and generate language, such as Claude or Gemini.
LMS
Learning management system: software for delivering, tracking and reporting on training.
Localisation
Adapting content and the interface to another language and region, including dates, formats and wording.
Magic link login
Signing in through a one-time link sent by email, with no password to type.
MCQ
Multiple-choice question: a question with several options, one or more of which are correct.
Metadata
Data that describes content, such as topic, skill, level or author, used for search, filtering and reporting.
Microservices
An application built from many small, independent services that can be updated and scaled separately.
Microsoft Entra ID
Microsoft’s cloud identity and sign-in service, formerly called Azure Active Directory.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Sign-in that needs a second proof of identity, such as a code from a phone app, as well as a password.
Multi-tenancy
One platform serving several separate organisations or units (tenants), each with its own users, data and settings kept apart.
OAuth
An open standard that lets one application access another on a user’s behalf without sharing the user’s password.
Observability
Being able to understand what is happening inside a running system from its logs, metrics and traces.
OCR

OpenID Connect (OIDC)
An identity layer built on OAuth 2.0 that is widely used for single sign-on.
OpenTelemetry
An open-source standard for collecting logs, metrics and traces from software.
Parent-child tenants

Predictive analytics
Using past data and statistical or machine-learning models to forecast outcomes, such as which learners may not complete on time.
Prompt
The instruction or question given to an AI model. A prompt library or template stores proven prompts for reuse.
Question pool
A set of questions from which a test draws at random, so learners get different questions.
RBAC

REST API
The most common style of web API, where systems exchange data using standard web (HTTP) requests.
Retention policy
A rule for how long data is kept before it is deleted or archived.
Retrieval (RAG)

Learning built around realistic situations in which the learner’s choices lead to different outcomes.
SCIM
System for Cross-domain Identity Management: an open standard that automatically creates, updates and removes user accounts from your identity system.
SCORM
Sharable Content Object Reference Model: the most widely used e-learning standard for packaging courses so any compliant LMS can run and track them. Versions 1.2 and 2004 are common.
